Lent: Season of Reflection
Belonging in
a Christian Church, lent is a period of penitential preparation for Easter. It is
a time wherein we recall how Christ passionately gave himself to the cross
through all the sufferings and a time of his death and resurrection. As I have
observed and grown with this practice, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday are
considered as public holidays. On the Ash Wednesday, Catholic people place
ashes in their forehead as a sign of inner repentance. While the practice of Fasting
and Abstinence, the most common during Lenten Season, is not really practiced
by everybody. Some people who deeply believes, submit themselves to penitence
which fasting starts from Ash Wednesday until Good Friday. On the other hand,
Abstinence is the practice of abstaining from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good
Friday and all the Fridays of the Lent. Furthermore, Visita Iglesia or the
practice of visiting churches and reciting the station of the crossed is
commonly done on Maundy Thursday or Good Friday. However, it cannot be denied
that the emergence of pandemic has given us a lot of restrictions. Limiting the
movement of people particularly in travelling from place to place. Thus, giving
an adjustment in today’s season of Lent as we cannot gather freely with an
enormous crowd, unlike before.
However,
the effects of pandemic cannot prevent our every spirit to remember His
sacrifice. As we all have to bear in mind, that we find a quiet time with the
Lenten Season, for we value that Christ has paid the great price for us.
